Introducing Resources for Directors, Managers & Coordinators of Volunteer Programs

Miami's chapter of DOVIA, Directors of Volunteers in Agencies, has teamed up with Hands on Miami (HOM) and the Center on Nonprofit Effectiveness (C-One). 

 

Together, we are expanding professional development and support for volunteer managers. 

    1. Florida Volunteer Administration Certification
    2. Online resources: Information, tips and tools for volunteer managers.
    3. Leadership: Seasoned volunteer managers and emerging leaders are invited to participate with the DOVIA planning group. 

 

                                                                                                                                           

 

We seek to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations in Miami-Dade County to effectively utilize volunteers in support of their missions. 

 

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

          ·        Be a leader. C-One hosts the DOVIA leadership team to help plan regular peer learning and networking activites.

·         Spread the word! Help us grow netwrking and peer-learning within our profession. Encourage other directors, managers, and coordinators of volunteer programs.


 ·          
Be a speaker.  Serve as a panelist or small group discussion leader.


 ·           Host a DOVIA event.  Provide a meeting location and refreshments.  Ideal venues have space for 30-50 participants and parking.

 

 

                                                                                                                                           

 

 

Florida Volunteer Administration Certification

A professional certification awarded through a partnership of the Florida Association of Volunteer Centers, Volunteer Florida and the Points of Light Foundation.  The program is implemented by local partners in seven Florida communities—and now including Miami-Dade County. 

Graduates include professionals from both the public and private sector who are responsible for the management of volunteers within agencies.

 

Curriculum:Certification requirements include 18 hours of training on the best practices of volunteer management delivered over a three-day period. Curriculum topics include:

· Understanding Volunteers

· Planning Your Volunteer Program

· Recruiting and Placing Volunteers

· Training Volunteers

· Supervising Volunteers

· Evaluating Your Volunteer Program

Class and certification fee: $175 General Registration. $125 C-One Members.

 Creating Community-Wide Group Projects,” by the Points of Light Foundation. A step-by-step guide on planning, marketing, and implementing a group project. Includes timelines, ideas for engaging partners, strategies on how-to-work with the media, and planning guides.  


Volunteer Recruitment” by Hands on Network.  Ideas for recruiting volunteers at school, church, work, etc. 


Recruiting Family Volunteers” by Points of Light Foundation.  Includes an overview of family volunteering, what family volunteers value, and ways to recruit.


Reinventing Aging: Baby Boomers and Civic Engagement” by
Harvard School of Public Health and Metlife Foundation Initiative on Retirement and Civic Engagement.  Information for nonprofits tapping into the wave of retiring Baby Boomers as nonprofit volunteers.  


Developing Media Messages for Volunteer Programs” by Working Solutions and available through Points of Light Foundation.  Includes
worksheets and helpful hints on how to craft effective media messages about your volunteer program.

Since 1981 DOVIA Miami-Dade has been a resource for those that direct, manage, or coordinate volunteers in our community. DOVIA has promoted professionalism within the field through:
