2010 Nonprofit Day: Social Networking Tools

On February 9, 2010, Citi and Citi Foundation presented a gathering for South Florida nonprofits at Broward College in collaboration with the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, Center On Nonprofit Effectiveness (C-One), powered by Hands On Miami, and Broward Community Foundation

Results:

The goal was to raise awareness and stimulate thinking about the potential for Social Networking tools to enhance our nonprofit missions.  A total of 113 of South Florida's nonprofit leaders and experts particiated and presented.  From participant feedback forms:

  • 100% agreed the session was a valuable use of time
  • 100% gained useful knowledge about Social Networking Tools
  • 85% said they would quickly implement ideas learned
  • 93% agreed that the training would help with organizational effectiveness and sustainability

Presentation Materials:

Note:  Additional materials may be emailed as they become available from speakers.

Other Opportunities to assist nonprofit leaders with Social Media:

Learning:

Participants  considered how nonprofits are using Social Media tools to enhance marketing, fundraising, outreach to stakeholders, and service delivery.

The day confirmed a few things about South Florida's nonprofit executives:

  • By now, we are sold on the potential of Social Media. The response to Haiti’s earthquake that rolled through Social Media channels across the world was enough to convince the most stubborn "hold-outs" among us.

  • We’re living a dual Social Media existence: Experimenting with tools in our personal lives, yet only scratching the surface of what could be done within our organizations.

  • We may have missed the point. We’ve over-delegated Social Media strategizing to interns, volunteers, and staff that have more time or are more tech-savvy. Still, it’s not too late to get connected.

  • Sometimes we forget what we already know. Technology is only part of Social Media. We can’t lose sight of what we know makes communications successful: We have what it takes to know our target audience, define the right message, and choose the best communication vehicle (Social Media tools or other).
